PMV public networking events ('Pub Meetings')
As before, four PMV Pub Meetings will be held in 2011 (see Events for details). The first of these was held in March at the Monash Hotel in Clayton, following a tour of AB SCIEX's new office and research facilities. Notably, this was PMVs first pub meeting hosted by a trade member (thanks to Nick Koletsas and Frank Rooney). June saw a return to the popular James Squire Brewhouse, hosted by PMV president of proteomics, Tony Purcell. Whether it was due to the mid-city venue or the classy beer, the good attendance of regular and new faces was pleasing. In September, we held our AGM at St Vincent's Institute, followed by a our of the proteomics facility hosted by Rohan Steel. We then headed out to the Pumphouse Hotel for follow-up discussions and refreshments. At the AGM, plans were cemented to welcome the Melbourne Protein Group (MPG) as the first affiliate member of PMV. MPG president, Erinna Lee, outlined their student-focussed goals and all agreed that the new affiliation brought mutual benefits and exciting opportunities. Mike Hubbard spoke about completion of contractural requirements with the Victorian Government (PMV establishment grant) and the positive comments they made about our accomplishments so far (as reviewed in the 120-page Final Report). Other discussion centred on bulk-buy deals for PMV members, education and training workshops. All current office bearers were re-elected. Congratulations to: Presidents of Proteomics and Metabolomics, Tony Purcell and Ute Roessner; Secretary, Sri Ramarathinam; Treasurer, Mike Hubbard; Trade Representative, Julie Holliday; Industry Representative, Pierre Scotnov; Student Representative, Charles Reilly, and Media Liason, Ian Smith. Peter Meikle and Rohan Steel also kindly agreed to continue acting as coordinators of our pub meetings.

PMV pub meetings are held quarterly, normally preceeded by a meeting of the PMV Working Party. All PMV members and other interested parties from trade, industry and academia (including students & RAs) are welcome to attend either or both components. After the working party meeting, the proceedings usually involve a tour of the host organisation followed by informal networking at a nearby pub for as long as stamina allows. The modest entry cost (only $10, and students free, thanks to subsidy by PMV) covers finger food and a drink. More comprehensive meals are available on site for those wanting them. For further information or a copy of the meeting minutes, please contact Sri Ramarathinam (srihr@unimelb.edu.au).

Shimadzu Education Initiative launched by Prime Minister
Prime Minister Julia Gillard opened a New Science Centre and Shimadzu/Victoria University Laboratory, at Hoppers Crossing Secondary School on July 1st 2011. In keeping with Shimadzu's focus on education and training, The Hoppers Crossing Secondary School Science Laboratory is being set up to promote science in secondary and primary schools in the greater western area of Melbourne. Building on the education partnership between Victoria University (VU) andShimadzu in 2009, in which 12 UV/Vis Spectrophotometers were donated to secondary schools in Victoria, the Hoppers Crossing Science Centre has received HPLC, AA and UV/Vis instrumentation for their new science centre. VU and Shimadzu also have a commitment to ongoing support of the instruments and educational courses. For further information please contact John Hewetson (jh@shimadzu.com.au).

Protein-based drug partnership between AB SCIEX & The University of Melbourne
PMV's co-President, Tony Purcell, has headed a partnership between AB SCIEX and The University of Melbourne to develop a breakthrough approach to drug metabolism studies of biopharmaceuticals (see the press release).
