Workforce Development

A major goal of PMV is to improve local workforce quality and numbers through effective training and scholarship.

PMV Technician Training Scheme
An apprenticeship-style training scheme has been drafted and will be implemented once appropriate start-up funding is secured. Initially targeted at science technicians wanting to specialise, the plan involves serial placements with two local research groups and an optional trade-hosted segment (e.g. overseas exposure to new equipment or technology at a company's R&D centre) over the course of two years. This will lead to a desirable "train on demand" capability, whereby client organisations can negotiate to have their staff trained in areas of particular interest.

Employing Skilled Workers From Overseas
Following earlier input by VPC, proteomics was included in Victoria's "skills wanted" list. Consequently, suitably skilled migrants may receive preferential treatment through sponsorship by the Victorian Government (Skilled-Sponsored visa). This mechanism has expedited the migration of at least one proteomics expert to Melbourne that we are aware of.
